I can read long vowel words. We have made the switch from short vowel to long vowels. This is BIG stuff in first grade! We teach the kiddos that magic e is silent at the end of the word but tells the other vowel to say his name like A! The word cap becomes cape and mat becomes mate!
I can write words with long i magic e.

Religion
We can forgive others as Jesus did.
An apology has more than just one part saying sorry.
I am sorry for.....
Next time I will...
How can I make it better?
It's okay, I forgive you
Leave with a hug, handshake or high five!

Writing
I can write a sentence with a capital letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end.
This month we will soon begin a unit writing informational text called How-To. The students will brainstorm a list of things he or she is an expert of for example tying shoes, brushing teeth, or making the bed. Then students will write step by step directions on how to do that particular thing to teach his or her classmates. Our focus will be to use transitional words like First, Next, Then, Last.

We just switched for a new Math group! Ask your student who he or she has as a Math Teacher!
We are working on our subtraction strategies; using objects and pictures to count and take away rather than our fingers!
I can subtract to find the difference to 10.

Science
We are learning to be meteorologists! In this unit, the students will explore tools to measure weather and observe and record the weather for 1 week. How will the weather change? What did we observe?
Along with this study of types of weather, the students will examine the four seasons. Why do we have seasons? What changes happen in each?
