Dear Parents,
This year the kindergarten, first, second, third, and fourth grade teachers will continue doing Response to Intervention (RtI) in their classrooms. We wanted you to know that we will still be utilizing the best practices in education to ensure success for all students here at St. Pius X.
First, all students in K-4 will take part in a universal screening process in various areas of reading called MindPlay. This screening will help the RtI Team determine which students will benefit from additional interventions in specific areas to help improve their knowledge of reading. The screening will take place four times. The RtI Team will meet to discuss the results. The RtI Team is composed of the administration, school counselor, Reading Specialist, and the classroom teachers. After evaluating the MindPlay results and consulting with the team, your child will enter one of three tiers.
Since you are the primary educators of your children, the classroom teacher will communicate with you concerning how your child is performing at school and what our best educational recommendations are to aid in the success of their learning. All information will be communicated to you when any changes are made, but please feel free to contact the RtI team with any questions you may have about the process.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lonnemann Mrs. Greenwell Mrs. Staviski Mrs. Clark

- Tier 1- The classroom teachers will utilize differentiated instruction for all students in the classroom. This is accomplished through high quality focused teaching using the Journey’s reading series and other language arts materials.
- Tier 2- Students who do not meet benchmarks are given additional instruction two times a week. Students will work with teachers in skill based small groups. The teachers will monitor the student progress with the MindPlay screener to see how they are improving on their designated skill areas.
- Tier 3- Students who score in a critical intervention level will receive additional instruction and interventions with the Reading Specialist. These small group interventions will be in addition to Tier 1 and Tier 2 instruction. The goal would be to fill in critical gaps that could impede the natural progression of reading. After approximately seven weeks your child will be re-evaluated and the RtI Team will determine if they would benefit from further interventions or if they would most benefit from moving to a different Tier.
Since you are the primary educators of your children, the classroom teacher will communicate with you concerning how your child is performing at school and what our best educational recommendations are to aid in the success of their learning. All information will be communicated to you when any changes are made, but please feel free to contact the RtI team with any questions you may have about the process.
Sincerely,
